How to get good school data from your child

July 31, 2017

This summer we're sharing a collection of Tips that we feel are deserving of a second look. Our hope is that you'll find a few useful gems you may have missed along the way that you can bookmark for the fall. Enjoy!

Today's tip:

If getting good data from your child about her day at school is challenging, consider the way you’re framing the question. In a wonderful blog post on huffingtonpost.com, blogger Liz Evans shares “25 ways to ask your kids ‘So how was school today?’ without asking them ‘So how was school today?’” By asking more specific and thoughtful questions, you’re likely to get more specific and thoughtful responses in return. Give one or two of Evans’ questions a try and learn more about your child’s day than you ever dared imagine!

The Engaging Minds Difference

Engaging Minds offers a unique approach to traditional tutoring: we teach students how to learn and provide them with academic skills and strategies they need to succeed over the long-term. In addition to providing support in writing, reading comprehension, and problem-solving, we focus on teaching the increasingly important executive function skills (organization, prioritization, initiation of tasks, time management, planning, goal-setting) and guide students to become independent and self-confident learners. With these fundamental skills in place, students are better able to effectively approach, manage and complete nightly homework assignments, and are better poised to achieve their full potential.
