Tip of the Week
Don’t let the portal decide
Many students start homework the same way: They log into their school portal, see what’s there, pick something, and begin.
At first glance, this seems responsible. They checked the portal and got started. But without stepping back to see the big picture, students often miss what matters most. The portal shows what exists, not what should happen first. A quick assignment due tomorrow can crowd out a larger project due next week.
Portals are great tools for students because in many cases, everything students need is right there. However, we need to teach students how to use them. The skill to build is using the portal to make a plan.
Before starting, encourage your child to scan the full list of assignments, notice what’s coming up later in the week, and choose what to tackle first. A quick two-minute planning pause can help students prioritize, start earlier on bigger tasks, and avoid last-minute stress.
