Embrace the downtime

Last week, we shared tips on how to help kids overcome the winter doldrums and keep their school performance on track. This week, with February vacation just around the corner for some students and a March spring break coming up soon for others, we’re sharing a few ideas on how students can use the downtime to recharge their batteries and return to school refreshed and ready to learn.

These suggestions may seem apparent, but the point is to bring them top of mind so you can be intentional around how you approach the vacation break.

  • Embrace the Downtime: Resist the urge to over-schedule. Downtime is crucial for relaxation and allows kids to de-stress. Let them sleep in, do something mindless, or re-engage with a hobby they’ve put aside. This mental break is essential for recharging.

  • Get Active: While relaxation is important, physical activity is also key to boosting energy levels and improving mood. Encourage your student to get moving, whether it’s going for a hike, going to the gym, or ice skating.

  • Socialize and Connect: Meaningful social interaction is a powerful mood booster. Encourage your student to spend time with friends and family, whether it’s a movie night, a game night, or simply hanging out.

  • Prepare for a Smooth Return: While it’s important to relax during vacation, a bit of planning toward the end of vacation can make the return to school less stressful. Spend a little time organizing school supplies, reviewing upcoming assignments, or setting goals for the rest of the school year. This can help ease the transition back into the routine.

Time away from school is a chance for students to reset and recharge. By incorporating these suggestions, they can return to school feeling refreshed, rejuvenated, and ready to tackle the rest of the school year.
