Tip of the Week
Fostering academic independence: I do, We do, You do
Help your child become more independent with their schoolwork by employing an “I do, We do, You do” approach.
- I do: Model the approach or strategy for your child. Explain the strategy you’re using, demonstrate using it successfully, and think aloud to make the strategy explicit.
- We do: Practice the strategy together while offering feedback and support.
- You do: Remove yourself from the equation and let your child practice the skill on their own.
Students learn sooner from concrete modeling. Time spent up-front modeling an approach or behavior will reap rewards down the road as your child gains independence.
