Tip of the Week
Getting things done before getting on screens
Most families know this truth: There’s no magic answer to reducing screen time, and eliminating it altogether isn’t realistic. However, small, intentional shifts can make a real difference.
One simple way to create space and make sure important things happen first is the “Two Things Before Screens” rule.
This week, before any additional screen time, ask your child to:
- Check their planner or school portal for what’s due and what’s coming up.
- Complete one quick, doable task, like finishing an assignment, emailing a teacher with a question, reading 10 pages, or prepping materials for the next day.
Over the upcoming winter break, ask your child to:
- Plan the day. What fun non-screen activities are they engaging in today?
- Complete one quick responsibility. Get dressed for the day, help with a short household task, or tidy one small space.
In this scenario, you’re not taking screens away. You’re taking a brief pause and helping your child practice responsibility before relaxation.
