Hitting a curveball

School, like baseball, can throw curveballs: challenging tests, disappointing grades, or challenging teacher dynamics. These moments can leave students feeling overwhelmed, anxious, and like they’ve struck out. Our challenge is to help them step back up to the plate, turn those “lemons” into lemonade, and build the resilience they need for future success. Here are a few ideas.

  1. Acknowledge the feelings. It’s okay to feel disappointed or frustrated. Help them feel heard.
  2. Focus on what they CAN control. Shift focus to future actions, like preparing for an exam differently or getting started on a project earlier.
  3. Model resilience. Setbacks are a normal part of learning and growth. Share your own experiences and talk through how to handle setbacks calmly and purposefully.

We can build resilient students ready for life’s challenges by turning school struggles into future strengths.
