Tip of the Week
More than just a check-in
Parent-teacher conferences are more than just check-ins. They’re opportunities to build a strong partnership with your child’s teacher and create a supportive environment both in and out of the classroom. While parents of younger students may have more frequent scheduled one-on-one meetings, oftentimes parents of older students will benefit from check-ins with guidance counselors or specific teachers. The following tips apply for students of all ages.
- Before heading in for your parent-teacher conference, ask your child what you can expect to hear at the meeting. Give them the opportunity to fill you in on successes and possible areas of difficulty, as well as any concerns they may have.
- Based on your child’s feedback and your own impressions thus far, prepare specific questions about your child’s progress, behavior, and social interactions that will help guide your support at home.
- Be a good listener. Hear what the teacher is saying and ask clarifying questions if needed.
- Build a bridge between home and school and explore ways you can work together to reinforce learning and address any concerns. Identify specific ways you can support and reinforce your child’s learning at home.
Your child is an interesting kid! Let the teacher know what interests and excites them to make it easier for the teacher to make connections with your child.
