Tip of the Week
Quitter’s Day
The word “resolute” is deeply connected to the concept of New Year’s resolutions. In this context, “resolution” signifies the act of making a firm decision to change. “Resolute” describes someone who is determined, unwavering, and firm in their purpose.
Being “resolute” is key in making New Year’s Resolutions come to fruition. Not surprisingly, New Year’s resolutions often fall by the wayside by the end of January. In fact, the second Friday in January is often called “Quitter’s Day.”
To increase your child’s chances of success, focus on these “resolute” qualities:
- Be specific with your goals. Instead of “get better grades,” aim for “I’m going to turn in my homework on time.”
- Be determined. Anticipate challenges and identify strategies to overcome them. “I get easily overwhelmed.” Break tasks down into manageable pieces over multiple days.
- Be unwavering. Setbacks are inevitable. A resolute approach means staying committed to your goals and recognizing that one slip-up only dooms your resolution if you let it.
