Tip of the Week
The initiation mindset
When your child is feeling stuck and finding it hard to get started on a task, it can help to think about their initiation mindset, the way they naturally approach new assignments and projects. At Engaging Minds, we guide our students to identify their best way to approach a task. There’s not necessarily a right or wrong way; however, there is a way that makes the most sense to your child that will help get them get started and moving toward the finish line. Guide them to play to their strengths and natural instincts.
Here are a few initiation mindsets along with some tips to help your child get going.
- Doers: Some students do best by diving in and learning, adjusting, and building momentum as they go.
- Planners: If your child prefers to have a clear roadmap before they begin, take some time to outline the steps involved and create a schedule or checklist.
- Artists: If your child is a visual learner, try sketching, doodling, or creating a visual representation of the final product. It often helps to “begin with the end in mind.”
- Collaborators: If your child appreciates bouncing ideas off others or simply having a body double, help them find a partner (could be you!) to brainstorm ideas and work together.
- Organizers: If your child likes order and likes to have everything in its place, help them gather all the necessary materials and resources before they begin to clear their mind and focus on the task at hand.
- Thinkers: Take the necessary time to fully understand the task before starting, carefully reading and analyzing the instructions or prompt.
By helping your child identify their preferred initiation style and using the corresponding tips, they will be better able to manage procrastination and approach new challenges with confidence.
