How To Get Your Child Reading This Summer
There’s a lot to be gained by having your child read for 20 minutes each night this summer. Most importantly, it will help keep your child’s mind engaged and avoid the “summer slide.” Yet, sometimes it’s challenging to get students motivated to do it! Here are a few strategies you might try to get your child reading:
- Model it. Create a quiet reading hour (or half hour) when everyone in the house is reading a book of his or her choice.
- Read the book together. Take turns reading every few pages, and make time to “stop and reflect” to strengthen comprehension.
- Bring your child to a bookstore and let him roam through the stacks (you know, the way we used to in the 1990s). With so many choices that he’ll be able to physically hold and flip through, he’ll undoubtedly find a number of titles that peak his interest and spark some excitement.
