Intelligence and executive function

If your child is struggling with executive function, it’s important she know that intelligence and executive function skills are only moderately correlated. Making this distinction will help you engage in a richer conversation about academic coaching. Your child may have the capacity and brain power to be a star student, but if her executive function skills are weak, she won’t be able to showcase it. In this case, the challenge is not in her ability to understand the content. Rather, it’s a weakness in how to approach and manage the content that is getting in the way. Understanding this key difference will help your child recognize that she is, in fact, extremely bright; she just needs to learn some tools to help her demonstrate it.
