Tip of the Week
Overcoming obstacles
Many students feel powerless and overwhelmed when faced with a challenge they feel is beyond their ability or control. The truth is, with a little effort and persistence, most obstacles can be overcome, and a sense of order can be restored. For many students (and adults), it’s often the first step that’s the most difficult to take. Once taken, momentum takes over and soon the feelings of helplessness dissipate and the student begins to feel empowered. So, when your child feels “out of control,” take a moment to empathize (those feelings are real!), and then help him determine what small step he can take (turn it positive) to get started. He is not powerless to make change. In fact, it is always within his control to act and take that first step forward.
