The Benefits of Graphic Novels

Graphic novels sometimes get a bad rap. Some don’t view them as “real literature” and detractors worry that their students are “missing out” by not reading more traditional books. Yet research tells a different story. Evidence has shown that graphic novels generate a love of reading, especially in reluctant readers. According to a number of studies, students who read graphic novels aren’t “missing out” at all; in fact, they’re practicing and gaining a number of important academic skills.
