The Post-it note “parking lot” strategy

If your child is impulsive and/or has a million things going on in his mind at once (and has a hard time keeping it all in!) try the “parking lot strategy”. Give your child a pad of Post-It notes and have him leave it next to him on his desk while he’s doing his homework. Whenever something pops into his head that doesn’t pertain to the work at-hand, have him write it down and put it aside in the “parking lot”. When his homework is done, he can go back and explore all the other wonderful thoughts that may have otherwise sidetracked him.
