Two Questions to Ask Prior to Studying for an Exam
For best results on tests and quizzes, encourage your child to answer the following two questions as a first step in their studying.
- What material will the assessment cover?
- What is the format of the assessment? Short answer, multiple choice, essay, other?
Knowing precisely what the assessment will cover helps the student determine where they need to focus their time and energy (they can use a
K-W-L chart to pinpoint where there are gaps in their learning). And if they know the format of the assessment, they’ll be able to pick the appropriate strategies to use to study (flashcards, outlining essays, problem sets, etc.). With a firmer handle on what’s coming and taking the time to prepare accordingly, your child will enter the assessment feeling well prepared and with confidence.
