Using flashcards effectively

Flashcards, digital or old school, can be a great tool for learning terms, concepts and ideas if used effectively. A few suggestions:

  1. Use both sides of the card. For example, if memorizing terms, quiz yourself by the using the term side and the definition side.
  2. Don’t flip over the card too soon. No peeking! Give yourself enough time to think through a complete answer on your own.
  3. To facilitate critical thinking, apply the right question to the front of the card. Instead of “List three accomplishments of President Abraham Lincoln” ask “During his Presidency, how did Abraham Lincoln’s actions and decisions affect the lives of all Americans?”
  4. Set aside the cards you’ve learned cold and focus more intensely on those that are proving to be more difficult.
