When “lazy” isn’t lazy

This time of year, many students hit a wall. Attention drops, frustration rises, and emotional regulation becomes harder. What can look like “laziness” is often mental fatigue. When the brain is tired, starting feels harder, sticking with tasks takes more effort, and even small challenges can feel overwhelming.

Instead of increasing consequences, increase support. A little extra scaffolding now can make a big difference.

  1. Sitting nearby during work time can help students stay focused
  2. Breaking tasks into clear first steps makes work feel more manageable
  3. Reducing background distractions lightens the overall cognitive load

These small adjustments often help students get started and once they begin, momentum builds. The goal isn’t to push harder, it’s to support smarter. Providing the right level of support now can prevent shutdown later and help students finish the year feeling more in control, capable, and confident
