When you have too many mental “tabs” open

When students struggle to focus, it’s often because their brain has too many “tabs” open, all competing for attention.

  1. One tab is the assignment.
  2. Another is a reminder to text a friend.
  3. Another is a worry about tomorrow’s quiz.
  4. Another is a random thought that feels urgent in the moment.

Before long, their mental browser slows to a crawl.

Instead of trying to force those thoughts away (which rarely works), help your child move them out of the way. Have them quickly write distracting thoughts down on a sticky note or in a notes app. Once it’s written, the brain doesn’t have to keep holding onto it, making it easier to refocus.

This simple habit:

  1. Clears mental space. Writing a thought down tells the brain, “This is safe. I don’t have to keep repeating it.”
  2. Strengthens prioritization. Students practice deciding what needs attention now versus what can wait.
  3. Supports organization. Loose thoughts are no longer floating around — they have a home.
