Tip of the Week

You’ve got an opportunity to set the standard

The start of the new school year is the perfect time to set a strong homework routine before old habits sneak back in. A clear routine lowers stress, builds independence, and strengthens executive function skills like planning, time management, and task initiation.

Here are six quick tips to get started:

  1. Choose a homework spot: Quiet, well-lit, and distraction-free.
  2. Set a schedule: It may be different everyday, but consistency matters.
  3. Create a checklist before getting to work: A visual list keeps students on track and builds self-monitoring.
  4. Prioritize your list: Which assignment should I do first (second, and third) and why?
  5. Getting unstuck: There are always going to be reasons why your child can’t get started. Together, create a getting unstuck checklist as a reference.
  6. Wrap-up wisely: Encourage your child to review tomorrow’s schedule and pack up what they’ll need—small steps that build foresight and organization.

A steady routine today sets the stage for calmer evenings and more confident learners all year long.
