MOMENTUM AND MOTIVATION FOR SUMMER READING

Sometimes it’s challenging to motivate students to read! Yet, there’s a lot to be gained by having your child read for 20 minutes each night this summer. Most importantly, it will help keep your child’s mind engaged and avoid the “summer slide.” Here are a few strategies you might try to generate some momentum around reading this summer:

  1. Model reading. Create a quiet reading hour (or half hour) when everyone in the house is reading a book of their choice.
  2. Read a book together. Take turns reading every few pages, and make time to “stop and reflect” to strengthen comprehension.
  3. Bring your child to a bookstore or local library and let them roam through the stacks. With so many choices they’ll be able to physically hold and flip through, they’ll undoubtedly find a number of titles that pique their interest and spark some excitement.
