Small successes yield big results

Start small. Some tasks, like organizing one’s binders and backpack, can feel daunting to students. To help your child get started, begin by asking them to do something small. After they accomplish the first small task, they will be more likely to respond to and accomplish the next. String together a bunch of smaller tasks in order to accomplish a bigger task. For example:

Go clean up your room.
Big task.
Get your clothes off the floor and into the hamper. Manageable task.

Sit down and get your homework done.
Big task.
Pick one assignment to get done before dinner. Manageable task.

Organize your backpack and binders.
Big task.
Gather all loose papers and recycle those you don’t need anymore. Manageable task.
