Summer (reading) Breeze

If getting your child started on summer reading assignments feels like an uphill climb in your household, you are not alone. We’ve compiled a new blog post with tips and strategies to help make summer reading feel more manageable. Here are a few highlights to get started:

  • If it feels too burdensome and your child is overwhelmed, help them break down the task into manageable pieces. It’s a long summer and there’s no need to cram it all into a few sittings.
  • If your child feels that they’d rather be doing anything else and that this “extra” work is cutting into their summer fun, work around their summer schedule and help them find “down” times where they can work in short bursts.
  • It’s possible they don’t understand the assignment and can’t figure out where or how to begin. Try walking through the directions together slowly and with a purpose
  • Try reading together – either the same book or different books. A family reading time where ALL devices are off and away will help your child feel you’re in it together.

The key to success is to identify and understand the root of the challenge and implement specific solutions that fit your child’s frame of mind. Happy reading!
