Institute a homework hour to curb “rushing to get done”

If your child is rushing through homework to get to ‘play time’, try instituting a homework hour (or hours depending on the age of your child) rather than a homework time. For example, if homework hour is from 4pm-5pm and your child finishes his homework at 4:30pm, he can choose a book to read or study for an upcoming quiz until the hour is complete. The key is to set the expectation that your child will be doing something academic for the entire hour. By doing so, you will help diminish your child’s desire to rush through his work, and will likely get him to engage with his work more fully.
